What To Do When You've Lost Motivation

Now that we’re a little farther into the new year, are you still going ‘pedal to the metal’ in terms of pursuing those health and fitness goals you set on January 1st? Don’t beat yourself up if you’ve lost your motivation and you’ve slacked off a little.

Research has shown that New Year’s resolutions typically aren’t that effective. And, less than 10% of people who set New Year’s goals actually achieve them. Now, before you think that’s a reason to not set goals at all, let’s make something absolutely clear…

The most likely reasons for the failure of New Year’s resolutions include people setting goals that aren’t:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-based

In other words, if you don’t set S.M.A.R.T. goals, you’re less likely to achieve them. So, if you’ve lost your motivation, the first step is to check the type of goals you set for yourself and make sure they meet the above requirements.

If You’ve Lost Your Motivation, Here’s How to Get It Back

The process of setting S.M.A.R.T. goals is a great first step, but it doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you won’t lose some steam after a couple of weeks working toward them. Here are some tips that can help you out if you find that you’ve lost your motivation before you’ve reached your end goal.

  • Build one habit at a time. Are you trying to change too much all at once? Studies have shown that people are more likely to develop positive habits when they focus on one habit at a time. Master one, such as checking in with your personal trainer on a weekly basis, before moving onto the next.

  • Focus on small achievable goals. If you have a large goal, break it down into smaller chunks that are achievable in a shorter period of time. For example, if you aim to be able to run a marathon next year, start by focusing on running an entire 5k within a specific amount of time. Your brain will see that goal as more achievable and you’ll be more motivated to work at it.

  • Work with a coach. Whether you work with a fitness trainer at your local gym, a private nutrition coach, or a personal trainer, having accountability to someone else can be a huge motivator. Plus, they can give you tips and tricks to make more progress in a shorter amount of time.

  • Take part in group fitness activities. One of the biggest benefits of group fitness classes and instruction is inspiration from others. When you’ve lost your motivation, there’s nothing quite like encouragement from a friend, or seeing the successes of someone else, to get you pumped up again.
